In all types of media there are all different types of conventions, these conventions have specific rules that must be followed in order for an audience to be able to identify that product to a set of stereotypes. In film, it is the different genres and sub genres that all contain contrasting "ingredients" in order for them to be known as a part of that genre but also so they can be broken and reinvented. This widens creativity as the conventions will therefore have another meaning as to what they did in the first place and is how a lot of films and products today must do to stand out to crowds.
In As, I created a music magaine front cover, a contents page and also a double page spread. However the conventions that I used I did not know the true deeper meaning behind them and why certain elements were placed a specific way. This therefore limited my creativity as I could not play around and use my own imagination to turn them into something unique. On the contrary, I did understand the conventional colours of pop magazines and why a female iconic figure was often used, (bright colours to highlight the fun, young and joyful aspect of pop songs, and the female iconic figure to attract its main age range and gender of young women). So in some ways my magazine has definitely been successful since it is recognisable to the public as a pop music magazine but I could certainly do more to try and truely understand conventions and how to successfully subvert their meanings to create something new and innovative.
In A2, I am making a horror trailer which falls under the psychological/slasher genre. Since I have a huge knowledge of real media texts in the horror industry and I have looked at around 30 different films from all different sub genres I truely am able to understand the semiotics behind a film and what message the film is trying to get accross through representaions of characters and it's narrative. For example in my trailer, we have based the steucture of our film a lot around the conjuring in order to stick to key time frames and shot lengths so that the pace of the trailer is correct since this is extremely important in the horror genre. I also now understand why the whole of the trailer but just be parts of disequilibrium in the film so that the audience have to go and see the movie in order to find out its ending and plot points. For the gore and makeup elements in our trailer, we used a lot of iconic slashers such as prom night and texas chainsaw to be able to successfully reinvent and copy the slashes, cuts and wounds within the film.
Overall, it is clear that I have developped my skills of understanding and knowledge of what conventions are made to do in a wide variety of categories but particularly in the horror sub genre. In AS, no real media texts were used or there were only one or two, which is not enough to be able to create a whole magazine from since I could not gather all the correct information. However in A2 the research into other films and the semiotics behind a film helped me to know that conventions are there for a reasonand things arent just places in trailers without a purpose.
In this essay, I am going to be writing about the Summer Trailer me and my group made over these past six weeks which is a psychological horror about a girl's fight between the good and evil in side of her. Within a trailer there must be a sense of narrative that allows the audience to catch and understand what the film being advertised will be about. Therefore, without it, a story is not built up and is not as effective on its viewers. This is different in trailers, as a story is not meant to be told, only parts of the plot are put on screen to leave the viewers wanting more and leaving them with unanswered questions. One of the theories that can be applied to my trailer is the theory of Todorov, however, with trailers, this theory is reversed. For example, a trailer must be a mintage of clips from within the movie, this is so that the audience is left with questions, which watching the full film will then answer. So, in order to do this, it must not follow the set three steps a ...

ReplyDeleteIntro - HOW does RMT conventions increase reinventing the old creativity?
"(bright colours to highlight the fun, young and joyful aspect of pop songs, and the female iconic figure to attract its main age range and gender of young women)." Good - but WHICH RMTs did you look at?
"So in some ways my magazine has definitely been successful since it is recognisable to the public as a pop music magazine but I could certainly do more to try and truely understand conventions and how to successfully subvert their meanings to create something new and innovative." - HOW? There is no examples or detail about your magazine to justify this, LIMITING your grade

The point is good, bit again there is no analysis of the examples here in your own work. This also limits your grade. MES, CAM shots EDITING, SOUNDs etc?
